At the 2025 Buenos Aires International Book Fair, the Taiwanese picture book 他們的眼睛 (Spanish title Miradas) made its Argentine debut, drawing attention with its poetic narrative, dual-color illustrations, and philosophical depth. Written by Hugo Wu and illustrated by Chen Pei-Hsiu, the book explores themes of observation and time, rendered in a style inspired by traditional ink painting. It was acquired by Argentine independent publisher Calibroscopio, who first discovered the title at the Taiwan Pavilion during the 2023 Guadalajara International Book Fair presented by our agency’s team members. Publisher Judith Wilhelm was deeply moved by its visual style and message, deciding on the spot to bring it to Argentina. After nearly a year of preparation, Miradas was published in 2024 with a specially designed cover by the illustrator. Calibroscopio, which previously introduced works by renowned Taiwanese illustrator Jimmy Liao to Spanish-speaking readers, continues to expand Taiwan’s presence in the Spanish-language market. The success of Miradas highlights how Taiwan’s consistent participation at FIL Guadalajara has become a vital gateway for introducing its picture books to Latin American publishers and readers.
